ChromeMate® May Improve Functional Recovery of the Heart after Ischemia

arrow  Back to Research

As heart disease remains the No. 1 cause of death in the United States, research on ingredients that help to enhance overall cardiovascular wellness is needed.  ChromeMate® is a unique, patented form of biologically active niacin-bound chromium (III) called chromium nicotinate or polynicotinate, a dramatically more effective form of chromium.  This study assessed the effect of ChromeMate® during ischemia/reperfusion injury in streptozotocin-induced type 1 diabetic rats.  Following a 30-day feeding period, rats hearts were isolated and subject to ischemia (obstruction of blood flow and oxygen to the heart muscle) and 120 minutes of reperfusion (resumed blood flow to the tissue). Cardiac functions such as aortic flow were found to be significantly improved in ChromeMate® treated rats. ChromeMate® increased phoshporylation of pAMPK and eNOS and increased translocation of GLUT-4.  These effects help to increase vascular function and blood flow, oxygen, and nutrients to the heart thereby alleviating the effects of ischemia/reperfusion injury in the diabetic heart muscle.  These finds add to the earlier studies demonstrating the significance of ChromeMate® as a cardio protective ingredient.
